Obituary For Edward E. Tanner

Mr. Edward E. Tanner, age 85, of Villa Rica, Georgia, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2020. He was born October 1, 1935, in Cedartown, Georgia, the son of the late Mr. Elton E.Tanner and the late Mrs. Ruby Lynn Lee Tanner. He worked as a Georgia State Patrol Trooper, retiring after over 32-years of service. Mr. Tanner was an avid coin collector. He had a love for family, his church and his community. Mr. Tanner was a member of the First Baptist Church of Villa Rica.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Tanner was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Estella Daugherty Tanner; and his sisters, Joyce Oliver Gutner and Carolyn Ann Argo.
He is survived by his son, Michael Tanner of Villa Rica, Georgia.
The Memorial Service scheduled for Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:00AM at the First Baptist Church of Villa Rica has been postponed. Further information will be made available when service information has been updated.

As a member of the 41st GSP Trooper School, I vividly remember (to this day) the enlarged picture of Ed’s wrecked patrol that was posted in our classroom to admonish, encourage and remind us all how vulnerable we were at high speeds. There’s no telling how many trooper’s lives were saved down thru the years when Ed cheated Death that faithful day, ultimately retired and lived a long life. Ed Tanner will be missed not only by his family, but by his many friends! I have known Ed most of my life, graduating from high school together. Even in his youth Ed had an outgoing personality, always a ready laugh and smile. He also had a great singing voice. I remember when he was part of a school trio that competed with other high school choral groups. He loved gospel music and later sang with the Dixieaires and other gospel quartets. Ed was a very dedicated Christian man who loved his church family. I personally saw Ed’s deep faith manifest itself many times over our years of friendship. Until we meet again, my friend.

My sweet Uncle Ed Tanner. Some of my earliest, happiest memories are of being in his and my Aunt Shirley’s home. It was Uncle Ed’s house that hosted family Christmas gatherings with him at the head of the table. He was the one who asked God’s blessing on the food and the family. He had a laugh that resonated through the house, always told a great story, and could give hugs like you wouldn’t believe. A giant of a man in every way, he was a servant at heart. He served his country, state, and community as a member of the US military, a career until retirement with the Georgia State Patrol, and as a Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Villa Rica, Ga. He was a giver, working behind the scenes, not needing accolades of man. He took Matthew 6:3 to heart. But, mostly he was my Uncle. He was my family. Although those family Christmas dinners had long since gone by the wayside, seldom more than two weeks would go by that we didn’t talk, and it was still comforting to be in his home. He was the last of his generation left here. And I loved him. Rest In Peace Uncle Ed. Until I see you again.

I am so glad I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Ed Tanner. He was so kind to help Myra take care of my brother Don, before he passed away. He was a person who showed in his life that he had the character of Christ in his life. For he was a great Man of God. I loved hearing Ed pray. He prayed powerful, spiritual prayers. He then became Myra sweet friend and he took such good care of her. I would tell him ” Mr. Ed, i love you , you take care of my Myra” Ed had a great sense of humor which all loved. He will be missed but We all know he was so ready to go to his heavenly home to be with Jesus. Sending my love, sympathy and prayers to his son Mike and Myra and all of his family.
